Why Make Your Own Flavoured Syrup for Holiday Drinks
Making your own flavoured syrups at home is a simple option that allows you to control what you consume. This way you can control how much and what type of sugar you eat. It also has the added bonus of controlling if your latte contains organic coffee or what dairy substitute you prefer.
DIY Mulling Spice Flavored Syrup
This recipe will knock your socks off with flavour and is naturally sweetened with honey and maple syrup. The mulling spice in this recipe gives the syrup the ultimate holiday flavour. Mulling spice in this recipe gives the latte a slight citrus spark with a background of cloves, cinnamon and allspice. But you can use any whole spices in your pantry or try experimenting with cocoa nibs, Coconut chips or chunks of fresh ginger.
Ingredients
- ½ cup Honey
- ½ cup Maple Syrup
- ½ cup Water
- 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
- 1 tbsp Splendor Garden Organic Mulling Spice
Directions
To make the syrup take cheese cloth and cut into 6 inch square. Add 1 heaping TBSP of mulling spice to cheesecloth and fold up corners. Tie the home made tea bag with some cotton thread or butchers string. Heat mixture of Honey and Maple in a small pot and add home made tea bag. Do not allow the mixture to boil or you will burn the honey. Once heated allow to cool for 10 minutes. Remove the tea bag and pour the syrup into a resealable glass jar. The home made mulling spice bag can be discarded or added to a pot of black tea to use up any remaining syrup.
To use syrup add 1 tbsp per cup of coffee or heated milk. Top holiday beverage with a little extra cinnamon and enjoy. This spiced syrup is so versatile you can add it to almost anything to bring out the flavours of the holidays. Try it as a topping for french toast, cocktails, or as a topping to a bowl of vanilla ice cream.
