We are creatures of habit. I get it. You bought some Apple Pie Spice, you love it, but there’s only so much apple pie being made in a year. Fret not, organic spice connoisseur, Splendor Garden to the rescue!

Here are 10 ways that you can use Apple Pie Spice

  1. Cinnamon Replacement. Recipes often call for cinnamon. Raise the bar and grab this blend instead. Use equal parts.
  2. Oatmeal. Sprinkle Apple Pie Spice on your Splendor Garden Oatmeal in the morning, and instead of using water in your oatmeal use apple juice or apple cider. Yum!
  3. Spiced Nuts. Make sweet spiced nuts and use Apple Pie Spice instead of the spices the recipe calls for.
  4. Aromatherapy. Before company comes over, boil some Apple Pie Spice on the stove with a little water and fill the whole room with fragrance!
  5. Rice Krispie Treats. Add a little to your Rice Krispie Treats and you instantly have a fall dessert the kids will love.
  6. Smoothies. I like to make a vanilla protein smoothie and add a little Apple Pie Spice and  a pip of vanilla. Yum.
  7. Whipped Cream. Add a sprinkle to your freshly whipped cream, and top off your favorite fall pie.
  8. Sugar Scrub. Make your own sugar scrub, add 1 teaspoon of this Apple Pie Spice recipe for every cup of sugar in the recipe you use. Put it in a jar, wrap it with a bow, and you’ve got yourself a fabulous hostess gift.
  9. Popcorn. Sprinkle a little on freshly popped and buttered popcorn, it makes a great snack.
  10. Drink Rimmer. Mix a little brown sugar with Apple Pie Spice and rim your next Apple Pie on the Rocks cocktail.

Herbs De Provence; A French Tradition

Herbes de Provence is a fragrant mixture of dried herbs typical of southern French cooking. Exact recipes vary, but thyme, savory, rosemary and an aniseed-scented herb such as fennel or tarragon are typical ingredients. Marjoram or basil may also be included in the mixture.

Splendor Garden Organic Herbs De Provence ‘Salt Free’ includes Basil, Fennel Seed, Lavender Flowers, Marjoram, Tarragon and Thyme Leaves!

Herbs De Provence

Herbes de Provence: Herbes de Provence is a blend of common herbs from the Provence region in France. Provence is the southeast tip of France, bordering on Italy and encompassing the French Riviera. These tradition herbs were first combined in the 1970’s, and like curries there is no set formula for blending Herbs De Provence. Herbs De Provence can include any of the following herbs, or not: rosemary, lavender, basil, thyme, marjoram, bay leaf, chervil, sage, savory, fennel, oregano, dill, tarragon….pretty much anything you might find in your pantry. Herbs De Provence is traditionally used as a rub or to season meats, vegetables and fish. Lavender flowers are common in the blends of herbs De Provence you’ll find here in the U.S., but traditional herbs De Provence does not typically include them. They were added to appease the tourists who identify Provence with the many fields of lavender there.

Herbes de Provence is popular for grilled foods, but can also be used for roasting or in soups, gravies or stews. It is rarely used as a seasoning after cooking, like salt or pepper. Cooking brings out the flavors of the herbs. In Provence where these herbs grow easily the blend can be made from fresh herbs, and used by the handful. They can be tossed on hot coals when grilling fish, meat or vegetables to add a smokey flavor. Dried herbs are equally effective and are more common in the herbs de Provence blends you’ll find in the U.S.. In the fancier markets herbs de Provence is sold in clay crocks, but today for convenience it is usually sold in the spice rack right next to other common herbs.

Black Pepper Brownies

Black Pepper Brownies

I love how the black pepper makes this sweet treat into a decadent, adultified version. The black pepper heightens the flavor of the chocolate to a whole new level and while you image it would be spicy hot, it’s not, it’s spicy GOOOOOD! Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. Not. One. Bit.

salt-and-pepper-caramel-brownies
Black pepper caramel brownies – rich chocolate brownies get a hint of spice from a hefty dose of black pepper, enhancing their absolute decadence.
Yield: 16 brownies
Ingredients
For the brownies
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled (I used Organic Coconut Oil and it was fantastic)
  • ¾ cup all purpose flour
  • ¾ cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp Splendor Garden Organic Black Pepper Ground
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 large eggs
For the caramel
  • 2 tbsp water
  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • ⅓ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp fleur de sel, for sprinkling
Instructions
  1. To make the brownies, heat oven to 325. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan, line with parchment paper, and then grease the paper. Set aside.
  2. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, pepper, and baking powder in a medium bowl. In a large bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, vanilla, salt, and eggs. Add the melted butter to the sugar mixture and whisk until smooth. Fold the flour mixture into the wet mixture.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and bake until just set, 24-26 minutes. Set on a rack to cool.
  4. Meanwhile, make the caramel. Add the water to a medium saucepan. Add the sugar to the pan, making sure it is moistened with the water. Cook over medium heat, without stirring, until the caramel is a medium amber color, about 5-6 minutes. Slowly stir in the cream, whisking constantly. Add the butter and cook, whisking constantly, until smooth and slightly thickened, 2-3 minutes more. Whisk in the vanilla. Pour the caramel over the brownies and spread evenly.
  5. Let cool, in the pan, for about 10 minutes. Sprinkle with fleur de sel and refrigerate until set, about 1 hour.
